Why is meteorological data important in photovoltaics?

Meteorological data play a decisive role in photovoltaics since they supply information about weather conditions which have an impact on the performance and safe operation of solar power systems. This data includes parameters such as insolation, diffuse irradiance, air humidity, air temperature, wind speed and wind direction.

Including wind measurement data allows operators to estimate the difference between the temperature on the module’s rear surface and the cell temperature in the module. Moreover, documenting the real operating conditions can benefit the operator or investor when making warranty claims. Measuring diffuse irradiance, air humidity and air temperature allows operators to take into account spectral impacts on the performance ratio.
